Description:
The Merzouga Desert, the jewel of the Moroccan Sahara, presents some of the most beautiful landscapes in Morocco. In this desert are the famous dunes of Erg Chebbi where you can admire magnificent sand dunes which extend to infinity.
Furthermore, the sunrises and sunsets in the Merzouga desert are spectacular, as are the starry nights with particularly clear skies.
Finally, you can explore the desert landscapes on camelback, immerse yourself in the fascinating Berber culture and meet locals. The Merzouga desert is the very essence of escape!
During this excursion, you will explore Erg Chebbi, in the heart of the Moroccan Sahara, where the diversity of landscapes will dazzle you: roads, trails, valleys, passes, gorges, dunes and villages steeped in history. An unforgettable adventure awaits you!
The Merzouga excursion is a three-day program circuit like this:
Day 1: Marrakech – Aït-ben-Haddou – Ouarzazate – The Dadès Valley
Departure early in the morning, we will leave Marrakech to head for Ouarzazate. On the way, you will cross the magnificent landscapes of the Atlas passing by the incredible Tizi n’Tichka pass which peaks at an altitude of 2,260 m.
On the way, you will pass by the Kabash of Aït-ben-Haddou, location of films such as Gladiator or Kingdom of Heaven. There, you will have around two and a half hours to discover the most surprising fortified city in Morocco and have lunch.
You will continue your journey to Ouarzazate, where you will have approximately an hour and a half to discover the Kasbah of Taourirt. This ancient fortified palace is one of the most famous examples of traditional adobe architecture in the region and represents an important cultural and historical heritage. You will take the Mille Kasbahs road to Skoura, and from there, you will cross the Valley of Roses to finally reach the Dadès Valley, where you will be accommodated.
Day 2: The Dadès Valley – The Todra Gorges – Merzouga
After breakfast, you will head to the spectacular Dades Valley located in the High Atlas and cross the incredible Todra Gorges, considered the most impressive and narrowest in the country.
You will then go to Merzouga crossing the Jorf Palmeraie (where the best dates in the country are grown) and you will have lunch before arriving in Arfoud, a small village known for its fossil fragments.
Once in Merzouga, you will leave the vehicle and head into the desert on the back of a camel in search of the camp where you will spend the night. While enjoying the silence of the Erg Chebbi desert, you will enjoy a typical Moroccan dinner.
Day 3: Merzouga – Rissani – Alnif – Tizi N’Tfrkhin – Ouarzazate – Marrakech
If there is something unforgettable in the Erg Chebbi desert, it is the sunrise. After enjoying this unique moment, you will have breakfast at the camp and begin the last day of the excursion.
You will then take the road to return to Marrakech passing through the Palmeraie of Tafilalet and the village of Rissani (the origin of the Alauí dynasty). You will cross the Accacia raddiana plateaus (plateaus are so named because of the predominance of the acacia species named Acacia raddiana in their plant composition) and the stone desert to reach Alnif. Here you will take a road that crosses the Anti Atlas mountain range, passing Tizi N’tfarkhin. You will continue your way through the village of Tinghir and the Dadès valley.
You will arrive in Klaat M’Gouna at midday, where you will stop to eat and rest before heading back to Marrakech via Ouarzazate and the High Atlas Mountains. You will return to your hotel around 8:30 p.m.
